It’s that time of the year again! Throughout the month of October DigitalOcean is hosting the Hacktoberfest 2022 event.
It's All About Open Source
Hacktoberfest 2022 is a celebration of all things open source! The event encourages anyone from anywhere in the world to contribute to open source projects.
Open source software (OSS) refers to publicly hosted projects in which anyone is able to freely use, view the source code, modify and even make contributions. It’s essentially projects which are openly driven by the public and therefore relies on contributions from anyone interested in getting involved in the project.
See our infographic on open source to get more insight into the impact of open source projects: What is open source and why does it matter? | An infographic
If you’re new to open source, Hacktoberfest is a great way to get started and to learn how you can contribute to open source projects. Checkout the Hacktoberfest 2022 site to register and for resources on how to get started. We also have the following article that will provide a gentle introduction for how to make contributions: A beginner friendly guide to making your first open source contribution
The goal of being a participant is to complete the Hacktoberfest challenge. This involves completing at least 4 Pull or Merge Requests on participant repositories either on GitHub or GitLab.
If you host open source projects you can also participate by registering as a maintainer. In this case you’ll need to complete at least 4 maintainer related actions such as merging Pull Requests. See more details on the Hacktoberfest 2022 site on maintainers.
By registering and successfully completing the Hacktoberfest challenge you’ll also receive a prize of either a Hacktoberfest 2022 T-Shirt or to donate for a tree to be planted.
However the prize is just one motivating factor why you should get involved! The main motive is to promote open source and encourage developers from all around the world to be aware of the work involved in running open source projects. Participating should encourage us to contribute to open source well beyond when Hacktoberfest 2022 is over.
Inspirezone Involvement In Hacktoberfest 2022
Just as in 2020 and 2021 Inspirezone is also in full participation for Hacktoberfest 2022!
On the Inspirezone GitHub we are hosting several repositories where you can make contributions that count for the Hacktoberfest 2022 challenge.
These repositories are:
There’s also a repository called BibleBeforeBread which I’m hosting on my personal GitHub profile and I’d welcome your contributions!
If you’ve got any questions on how to contribute to these repositories, you may comment or raise an Issue on the repository. Or join our Discord and participate in discussions around Hacktoberfest 2022 and beyond!
Happy hacking! 🏁💻
